| Caucus | A closed meeting of local members of a political party to select their candidates |
| Primary election | Election held by a political party to determine who the candidate will be in a general election. |
| National Convention | A national meeting of a party to officially nominate a candidate for the general election. |
| General Election | When citizens vote for the President of the US |
| Electoral College | When Electors vote for the President of the US based on individual State election results. |
| Poll | A survey of public opinion on issues or before elections. |
| Demographic group | People that have similar characteristics: age, gender, income, education |
| Media Bias | Idea that journalists and news companies cover political events a certain way to favor or oppose a candidates views |
| Interest Group | People that want to bring a specific cause to the attention of the government. |
| Campaign Finance | The rules and methods of raising money during political campaigns. |
| Democrat | Political party that is typically more liberal. |
| Republican | Political party that is typically more conservative. |
| Blue State | Most often votes for the Democrat candidate for President. |
| Red State | Most often votes for the Republican candidate for President. |
| Swing State | States that change who they vote for during election years |
| Independent | A person that does not belong to one of the major political parties. |
| Third Party | Any party that is not one of the 2 major political parties in the US |
| Incumbent | The person that currently has the position they are running for re-election to. |
| Constituent | A person that is a voting member of a State. |
| Political Apathy | A person that has little interest in politics, they are less likely to participate and vote. |
| Two-Party system | Where two political parties share power in government |
| PAC | Private groups that can raise money for political candidates . They work with campaigns but there is a contribution limit. |
| Super PAC | Private groups that spend unlimited money supporting or opposing a candidate. They can't coordinate with campaigns. |
