New Spain

Term/People to KnowDescription
Ferdinand Magellan An explorer that sailed for Spain. He lead the first sea voyage to the Spice Islands that circumnavigated the earth (Sailed completely around it.)
Francisco Coronado A Spanish conquistadors that searched the southwestern part of North America for golden cities.
Ferdinand & Isabella The King and Queen of Spain in 1492. They paid for Columbus's first voyage to the New World.
Vasco Da Gama A Portuguese explorer that found the first water route to India.
Ferdinando Pizzaro A Spanish conquistador that conquered the Inca empire.
New Spain The name for the Spanish colonies in the New World. New Spain covered most of South America, all of central America and most of southwest North America.
Tenochtitlan The capital of the Aztec Empire. Present day Mexico City.
Missons Religious villages or cities designed to convert Native Americans to Christianity.
Tianos The name of the Native American tribe that greeted Columbus in the New World.
Conquistador The name for a Spanish explorer. The name means conquerer.
Ponce de Leon A conquistador that searched present day Florida for the Fountain of Youth.
Bartolome de las Casas A Spanish monk that spoke out against the Spanish cruelty towards Native Americans.
Aztecs A powerful Precolumbian empire based in current day Mexico.
The 3 G's Gold, Glory, and God - The three main goals of Spanish explorers. To find gold, find fame, and convert Native Americans to Christianity.
Renaissance A time period in Europe where there was a rebirth of interest in Greece and Rome and education.
Hernando Cortez A Spanish explorer that conquered the Aztec Empire
Cibola A mythical city of gold
Incas A powerful Pre Columbian empire that lived in the Andes Mountains of South America.
