What is a direct democracy? a type of government where citizens have the power to participate directly in government
What is a Representative Democracy? form of government where citizens have the power to elect representatives to make decisions for them
What is a legacy? something accomplished or created that impacts future generations
What are Modern Democratic Governments? all present day governments that are influenced by Greek democratic ideas
What is a monarchy? a type of government that is run by a king or queen with absolute power and is based on heredity
What does perspective mean? a way of thinking about and understanding something
What is a theocracy? a type of government that is run by religion
What makes Athens a direct democracy? When the Athenian Assembly came together to vote on issues, they cast their votes by using black and white stones or beans. This process gives citizens the right to participate directly in government.
What qualifications must you meet to be considered a citizen of Athens? adult, male, free, Athenian born
What kind of democracy exists in the United States? Representative democracy
What kind of democracy exists in ancient Athens? Direct democracy
How is Greek democracy significantly different from monarchies and theocracies? Citizens could participate in government and make decisions about their city-state rather than submit to a ruler with absolute power.
What is the difference between a direct and representative democracy? In a direct democracy citizens directly and personally participate in government and in a representative democracy citizens elect representatives to participate in government on their behalf.
How did Greek democracy influence American democracy? Greek democracy set an example to later copy as America developed its democracy.
What caused the Greeks to separate into city-states? The geography of Greece, specifically the mountains, separated and isolated the people.
What were the Spartans known for? Their military strength.
What was the military formation perfected by the Spartan army? The phalanx
Which city state was located in a valley, not surrounded by walls? Sparta
Which city state was built on an acropolis, near the Aegean Sea and surrounded by walls? Athens
What are The Iliad, The Odyssey, and Theseus and the Minotaur examples of? Greek Literature
Why did Greek literature have an enduring impact on the world? It is an example of great literature and we still see the characters and storylines in books and movies today.
Which Greek legacy is a device that used the position of the stars, sun and moon to tell your location, the time of day and the date? the astrolabe
Which Greek legacy is a simple machine that decreases the amount of work needed to lift an object? the pulley
Which Greek legacy is the process that uses heat to turn ore into iron? ore smelting
