| Fief | Parcel of land that a lord granted a vassal |
| Knight | Warrior that lived by a code of honor |
| Feudalism | System of rule in which powerful local lords divided their land holdings among the lesser lords. In exchange, the lesser lords(vassals), pledged service and loyalty to the greater lord |
| Chivalry | Code of honor for Knights |
| Manor | Lord’s estate which contained one or more villages and the surrounding lands. |
| Serfs | Peasants who were bound to the land they worked on the manor |
| Self-Sufficient | Description of manor life for those who lived there...food, shelter, and clothing were all that was needed |

| Holy Roman Empire | An empire established in Europe in the 10th century A.D., originally consisting mainly of lands in what is now Germany and Italy |
| Treaty of Verdun | Treaty that ended power struggle of Charlemagne's 3 sons after his death and split Franks into 3 kingdoms |
| Lords/Nobles | People of high rank who received land in exchange for their loyalty to the King |
| Feudal Contract | The unwritten rules that determined the relationship between a lord and his vassal |
| Priest | A person who performs religious ceremonies |
| Monk | A man who has taken a solemn vow to devote his life to prayer and service in a monastery |
| Monastery | A place where communities of monks live lives of devotion to God in isolation from the outside world |
| Convent | A place where communities of nuns live |
| Peace of God | Church decree that forbade knights to pillage church property and extended protection to all noncombatants in society |
