TermDefinition
Sharecropping The process of renting a small portion of land from a landowner. The sharecropper had to give the landowner at least 1/2 of the crops. Kept freedmen and poor whites extremely poor.
Civil rights The rights of all citizens to be treated equally and fairly.
Civil Rights Act of 1866 A bill passed by Congress that declared freedmen to be full citizens with the same rights as whites.
Military Reconstruction Act Congress created this plan to divide the South into 5 military districts, led by a general.
Tenure of Office Act This act was passed to prohibit Johnson from firing certain federal officials without the consent of the Senate.
Scalawags White Southerners who opposed the war and voted Republican in elections.
Carpetbaggers Northerners who moved to the south after the war. They came to make money as the south rebuilt factories and railroads. Their bags had carpet on the outside.
The Enforcement Acts of 1870 and 1871 Acts passed by Congress to make it illegal to prevent another person from voting by bribery, force, or scare tactics.
The Amnesty Act of 1872 Acts passed by Congress to forgive the South for the past. Most Confederates were allowed to vote again.
Amnesty to forgive for past offenses.
The Compromise of 1877 Southern Democrats agreed to allow Hayes to become president of the United States in return for control of their own government.
The Command Army Act Congress limited control of the army by President of the United States. This limited Johnson's power to interfere with Congressional Reconstruction.
