13th Amendment 1865- Abolished slavery forever.
14th Amendment 1866- Gave freedmen the right to citizenship.
15th Amendment 1869- Gave freedmen the right to vote.
Freedmen's Bureau Agency that provided food, clothing, shelter, education, and medical supplies to freedmen and poor white farmers.
Black Codes Laws used to spell out the rights of freedmen.
Black Codes Freedmen could marry, own property, work for wages, and sue in court.
Black Codes Freedmen could NOT vote or serve on juries in the South.
Black Codes To help planters find workers to replace their slaves.
Black Codes Freedmen were required to work.
Black Codes If freedmen didn't have a job, they were arrested and hired out to planters.
Black Codes Freedmen could only do farmwork. They could not enter many trades or own a business.
Black Codes To keep freedmen at the bottom of the social order in the South.
Black Codes Public Segregation. Black children could not attend public schools.
Ku Klux Klan A group of white southerners who used violence and violent threats to intimidate and threaten freedmen who wanted to participate in politics in the South.
Jim Crow Laws Books filled with laws that separated whites and blacks in public places. Started after Southern Democrats came back into power.
Radical Republicans Wanted to punish the South for their secession from the Union and their part in the Civil War.
Andrew Johnson Became President after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
Impeach The act of bring criminal charges against a political figure.
Reconstruction The act of rebuilding the United States after the Civil War.
