Golden Age A period of great peace and wealth between 479 and 431 B.C.E.
Pericles A great politition that lived during the ancient and the classical times.
acropolis The hill above a greek city on which temples were built.
Parthenon The temple honoring the goddess of Athens, it was built on the acropolis above Athens.
myth a traditional story that helps explain a stories beliefs.
architecture The art of designing buildings.
sculpture The art of creating three-demensional figures from such material such as wood, stone, and clay.
Socrates An Athenian philosopher.
Plato An ancient greek philosopher.
Panathenain Games A group of games held Greece for a period of time.
Olympics Games played in Olympia by Greeks.
Why can Athens be called a city of contrasts? Athens can be called a city of contrasts because people lived in uncomfortable homes and the city's buildings were large and stately.
In what ways did Greek gods and goddesses play an important role in the lives of the Athenians? They would sometimes ask the Greeks for advice. each god or goddess had power over a particular area of life.
What were the Greek gods and goddesses like? The gods often looked and acted like humans, but they didn't age or die.
What was the Parthenon? The Parthenon was a huge temple that held all kinds of sculptures ans statues.
What are the parts of the Parthenon? Doric, Frieze, and the Pediment.
How did the Athenian sculptures change over time? The Athenian sculptures changed because some sculptures have what others don't have. Some also got more realistic.
Who was Phidias? What did he do? Phidias was a man who made sculptures that were then displayed in the Parthenon.
What were some ways the Greek drama differs from plays and movies of today? 1. Included a choir. 2. The plays were held outdoors. 3. The men played both the men and women in plays.
What do philosophers do? Philosophers search for wisdoms of knowledge.
How did Socrates try to teach others? He tried to encourage people to question the things that they thought they knew.
What happened to Socrates? He ended up drinking hemlock from a poisonous plant and dying.
What was the purpose of athletic events in Greece? The purpose of the games was to honor the gods and goddesses.
Describe one athletic event that id part of our present Olympics. Wrestling is one event where people have to try to pin the opponent the the ground. This sport is part of our present day Olympics.
Describe one athletic event that is NOT in our present day Olympics. An event that id not part of our present day Olympics is a chariot race where men raced by jumping on and off of a moving chariot, or a small wagon.
