| Emigrate | leave one's own country in order to settle permanently in another. |
| Ethnic group | a community or population made up of people who share a common cultural background or descent. |
| Steerage | the part of a ship providing accommodations for passengers with the cheapest tickets. |
| Sweatshop | a factory or workshop, especially in the clothing industry, where manual workers are employed at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions. |
| Assimilate | take in (information, ideas, or culture) and understand fully. |
| Tenement | a room or a set of rooms forming a separate residence within a house or block of apartments. |
| Slum | a squalid and overcrowded urban street or district inhabited by very poor people |
| Suburb | an outlying district of a city, especially a residential one |
| Protestant | a member or follower of any of the Western Christian churches that are separate from the Roman Catholic Church and follow the principles of the Reformation, including the Baptist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches. |
| Immigrant | a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country. |
| Nativism | the policy of protecting the interests of native-born or established inhabitants against those of immigrants. |
| Persecute | subject (someone) to hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of their race or political or religious beliefs. |
