What do scientists try to figure out when they find an object left by the First Americans? When scientists find a new object, they try to figure out whether it supports their ideas or suggests new ones. Chapter 1/Section 1
What was Beringia and how did it form? Beringia was a wide bridge of land between Asia and North America. It was formed when much of Earth was covered by glaciers and when water locked up in the glaciers, the level of the oceans dropped 200 feet. This exposed Beringia. Chapter 1/Section 2
Where did the first Americans migrate from/to? Scientists believe that the first Americans migrated from Siberia, in Asia, to present-day Alaska. Chapter 1/Section 2
How did the first Americans survive? Groups of American Indians survived by adapting, or changing, their style of living to suit each environment, its climate, and its natural resources. Chapter 1/Section 3
What did American Indians use natural resources for? American Indians used natural resources for food, clothing, and shelter. Chapter 1/Section 3
What is a cultural region? A cultural region is an area in which a group of people share a similar culture and language. Chapter 1/Section 3
How did American Indians view their environment? American Indians viewed their environment very spiritually. They believed each part of nature had its own spirit. Chapter 1/Section 4
Did American Indians have private properties? Unlike Europeans, American Indians didn't believe land could be owned as private property. They were deeply connected to their homeland and would even fight to protect it. Chapter 1/Section 4
Do scientists know everything about the First Americans? Scientists are still trying to find out more about the First Americans. They find few written records, animal and human bones, some stone and metal tools, and bits of pottery. Chapter 1/Section 1
