| Ethnic group | a community or population made up of people who share a common cultural background or descent. |
| Steerage | the action of steering a boat. |
| Sweatshop | a factory or workshop, especially in the clothing industry, where manual workers are employed at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions. |
| Assimilate | take in (information, ideas, or culture) and understand fully. |
| Tenement | a piece of land held by an owner. |
| Slum | squalid and overcrowded urban street or district inhabited by very poor people. |
