Urbanization Growth of cities resulting from industrialization.
Steamship A ship powered by steam which made it easier for immigrants to get from they're original country to the United States.
Tenement An apartment building that is usually run down and overcrowded.
Steerage The lowest point in ships where the poor immigrants stayed on they're trip to America.
Slum A neighborhood with overcrowded and dangerous housing.
Statue of Liberty
Social gospel A movement aimed at improving the lives of the poor

Hull House A model for other settlement houses of the time.
ticket office A place where immigrants could get tickets to planes and trains to get to other cities to reunite with their families
Ellis Island The first step in the United States for most European immigrants.
money exchange Where immigrants exchanged their country money for american money.
Melting pot A place where cultures blend.
kissing post The place where immigrants reunited with their families.
Assimilation The process of blending into society.
Angel Island The first stop in the U.S. for Asian immigrants.
Chinese Exclusion Act This law banned Chinese immigrants from the U.S. for ten years.
Plessy vs Ferguson A case where seperation of the races was legal.
Booker T Washington
Mass culture A common culture experienced by large numbers of people.
Department stores
Mail-order catalogs A publication that contains pictures and items to be ordered by mail.
Leisure A free time.
Ragtime A blend of African American songs and European musical forms.
