| Emigrate | Leave one's own country in order to settle permanently in another |
| Ethnic Group | Of or relating to a population subgroup with a natural or cultural subregion. |
| Steerage | The part of a ship providing accommodations for passengers with the cheapest tickets. |
| Sweatshop | A factory or workshop, esp. in the clothing industry, where manual workers are employed at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions. |
| Assimilate | Take in and understand fully. |
| Tenement | A room or a set of rooms forming a separate residence within a house or block |
| Slum | A squalid and overcrowded urban street or district inhabited by very poor people. |
| Suburb | An outlying district of a city, esp. a residential one. |
| Protestant | A member or follower of any Western Christian churches that are separate from the Roman Catholic Church and follow the principles of the Reformation, including the Babtist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches. |
| Immigrant | A person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country. |
| Nativism | The policy of protecting the interests of native-born or established inhabitants against those of immigrants. |
| Persecute | Subject to hostility and ill treatment, esp. because of their race or political or religious beliefs. |
