Urbinization The growth of cities because of the increasing jobs in factories and more workers.
Tenement An apartment house that is usually run-down and overcrowded.
Slum A neighborhood with such overcrowded, dangerous housing.
Social Gospel Aimed to improve the lives of the poor.The most important concerns of the social gospel movement were labor reforms, such as abolishing child labor. Some reformers inspired by the movement opened settlement houses.
Jane Addams Founded Chicago’s Hull House in 1889 with Ellen Gates Starr.
Hull House Became a model for other settlement houses.
Ellis Island The first stop for most immigrants from Europe.
Melting Pot How some Americans described the U.S.
Assimilation The process of blending into society.
Angel Island The first stop for immigrants from Asia.
Chinese Exclusion Act It banned Chinese immigration for ten years.
Plessy v.s. Ferguson Case in Supreme Court. It argued that “separate but equal” facilities did not violate the Fourteenth Amendment.
Booker T. Washington An early leader in the effort to achieve equality.
Mass Culture A common culture experienced by large numbers of people.
Department Stores Sold everything from clothing to furniture to hardware.
Mail order catalogs Included pictures and descriptions of merchandise.
Leisure Free time.
Ragtime A blend of African-American songs and European musical forms.
Steamship A ship that is propelled by a steam engine.
Steerage The part of a ship providing accommodations for passengers with the cheapest tickets.
Statue of Liberty A giant statue on an island in the harbor of New York City; it depicts a woman representing liberty, raising a torch in her right hand and holding a tablet in her left.
Detainee A person held in custody, especially for political reasons.
Ticket Office An office or kiosk where tickets are sold, especially for entertainment events or travel accommodations.
Money Exchange A business that allows customers to exchange one currency for another currency.
