Iroquois and Algonquin Native Americans

Archaeologist Scientist who learns about the past by studying artifacts.
Hunter-gatherers Person who gets food by hunting animals and gathering plants
Artifact Object made by people in the past.
Iroquois League One of the most powerful Native American groups in North America. Formed by 5 Iroquois Nations.
Longhouse Iroquois lived in wooden buildings from 40 to 200 feet long.
Wigwam Algonquian families lived in domed shaped houses called Wigwam.
Reservations Land set aside for Native Americans.
Wampum small beads made from seashells. Used to send messages.
What was the importance of the Bering Strait bridge? The Bering Strait was dry land during the Ice Age. This strip of land or land bridge connected two continents! People and animals probably wandered over the Bering Strait from Asia to North America. This probably happened 30,000 years ago.
Why did Algonquians move their villages in the winter? During the winter the Algonquians moved their villages deep into the forest because they wanted to be closer to the animals. The winter was the best time for hunting because they can see animal tracks in the snow.
Why was the Iroquois League formed? It was formed to bring peace to the Iroquois people who were at constant war with each other. It worked! 5 Iroquois groups or nations joined to form the Iroquois League.
What were the Algonquian children's jobs? During sap moon,the Algonquian children helped collect sap in buckets. Spring,they helped plant corn and other crops. Ripening moon they helped scare the birds away from the growing plants. During the Harvest moon children helped pick ripe vegetables.
What are the Algonquian people like today? Today about 75,000 Native Americans live in New York. Most live on reservations.
What is life like in the clan for Iroquois People? A clan was made up of families that shared an ancestor who lived in the past. All people in a long house were members of the same clan. Each clan was lead by a clan mother who made important decisions and was in charge of choosing Sachems.
What were festivals like for the Iroquois People? The Iroquois People held many festivals. The Green Corn Festival to give thanks for sweet corn. The Strawberry Festival to celebrate the ripe strawberries. Festivals were a time to give thanks. There was music, dancing, and games.
What role did woman have in Iroquois villages? Women had a lot of power in Iroquois Villages. They were in charge of long houses and made decisions about farmland. They also were in charge of choosing Sachems.
Describe the Algonquian people? They lived in Wigwams (dome shaped houses), They gave special names to each moon and children had jobs, they built canoes from Birch-bark trees, Algonquians moved their villages in the winter to better hunt.
Describe the Iroquois people? Deganawidah and Hiawatha brought peace to the Iroquois people. They created the Iroquois League which became one of the most powerful groups in North America. Leaders were called Sachems, They lived with their clans in longhouses, woman had a lot of power
