What is a clan? A closely knit family.
Why is the Arabian Peninsula well situated for trade? It is surrounded by bodies of water, it is the crossroad of Asia, Europe, and Africa, and Ivory is a good thing to trade.
Why did towns in the Arabian Peninsula grow into larger cities? Trade.
What products did people travel to the Arabian peninsula to gain? Ivory, incense, and perfume.
What is a caravan? A company of travelers journeying together.
Why was Mecca and important religious center? Because the Ka'ba was located there.
What does pilgrimage mean? A journey to a sacred place.
What does polytheism mean? The belief or worship in more than one god.
What does monotheism mean? The belief that there is only one god.
What is the Ka'ba? A stone temple at the center of Mecca.
Where was Muhammad born? In the holy city of Mecca.
Who appeared to Muhammad as the messenger of Allah? The Angel Gabriel.
Who is Allah? Allah is the muslim god. His name means god.
Who was the Angel Gabriel believed to be? The messenger of Allah.
Who are the Muslims? A follower of the religion of Islam.
What is the Qur'an? The Islamic sacred book of Muhammad's teachings.
What is the Shahada? (Profession of faith) Every Muslim has to believe that Allah is the only god, and Muhammad is his prophet.
What is the Salat? (Daily Worship) All Muslims must pray in Arabic, five times a day, facing Mecca.
What is the Zakat? (Charity) All Muslims must give at least 2.5% of their income to charity.
What is the Siyam? (Fasting) Muslims fast during daylight hours, and at the end they hold a large feast called "Eid at fitr."
Why do Muslims fast during the Siyam? To show that they depend on Allah for strength rather than food.
What is the Hajj? (Pilgrimage) All muslims who can do so are expected to make a pilgrimage to Mecca.
