Mesopitamia In ancient times the geoghraphic area located between the Tigris and the Eupherates Rivers
Sumer An area in the southern where the first cities appered.
City-State An early city that was like a a small independent country with its own laws and goverment.
Irrigation system A means of supplying land with water.
Sumerians Ancient people who lived in the geographic region of sumer.
Levee A wall of earth built to prevent a river from flooding its banks.
Culture A charaistic of civilazation.
Civilization A culture marked by developments in arts, sciences, goverment and social structure.
Technology The use of tools and other inventions for practical purposes.

Chariot A two wheeled vehicle pulled by a horse.
Scribe A person who writes.
Zigguart An ancient Mesopotamian temple tower.
Arch An upside down U or V shaped structure that supports weight above it, as in a doorway.
Cuneiform Writing that uses wedge-shaped characters.
Pictograph A symbol that stands for an object.
Topography the surface features of a place or region such as mountains or desserts.
vegitation the plant life of a place or region.
delta an area of sediment deposited at the mouth of a river.
fertilization the process of adding fertilizer or plant food to soil.
papyrus a tough water plant used to make paper and rope in ancient times.
nomad a person who moves from place to place with no permanent home.
enviormental factors the water topography and vegetation of an area or region
artisan a crafts person
peasant a person who does farmwork for wealthy landowners.
vizer a high-ranking goverment official.
alliance an agreement between nations to work together for common intrests.
embalm to treat a dead body with preservatives to prevent it from decaying.
sarcophagus a large stone coffin.
hieroglyph a symbol used in hieroglyphics a term of writing developed in about 3000 b.c.e.
census an official count of the population or number of people living in an area.
famine a serve of shortage of food.
climte the average weather conditions at a particular place.
physical features an aspect of the land , such as mountains, plateaus, and rivers.
vegetation the plant life of a place or region.
oasis a place where water can be found in a desert.
silt fine particles of rock.
tributary a stream that feeds into a large river.
maize a type of corn.
mutton meat from sheep
millet a type of grain.
Human Sacrifice A person who is killed as a part of a religious ritual.
Clan A large group of friends and family.
Ancestor worship honoring ancestors through rituals, such as offering food and wine to the dead.
Logoraph A written character that represents a word.
Economy A system of managing the wealth of a community or a region.
confucianism a Chinese philosophy that emphasizes proper behavior.
daoism A Chinese philosophy that emphasizes living in harmony with nature.
legalism A Chinese philosophy that emphasizes strict obedience to laws.
Madate of heaven A power or law believed to be granted by a god.
feudalism A system of Goverment based on landowners and tenants.
Civil servant A person who works for a Goverment.
Yin one half of the daoist concept of opposing forces of nature the opposite of yang.
Yang one half of the daoist concept of opposing forces of nature the opposite of yin.
Caravan A group of people traveling together.
Compass An instrument for determining direction.
Standardize To make the same.
Seismogragph An instrument for detecting earthquakes.
Toga A loose robe worn by men in Rome.
Anesthetic Something that takes away the feeling of pain.
Mirage An image of something that isn't really there, such as water.
Immortal Able to live forever.
Calligraphy The art of fine writing.
Lodestone A type of Iron ore.
Exile Living away from one's native country.
Bureaucracy A form of goverment that is structured like a pyramid.
