What were some failed colonies? Roanoke, Newfoundland
When was Jamestown colonized? 1607

What was the cash crop the English grew? Tobacco
Why did John Smith return to England? He was wounded in a gunpowder accident many think he was sabotaged.
What was the Starving Time? The supply ships don't arrive from England conflict with Indians forced settlers to stay in fort.Cold winter. Disease rate is high. Resort to cannibalism
Why was the New world a good place to colonize? It gave a place to extend their empire and it was a place to send manufactured goods.
Who financed the Jamestown quest? The Virginia Company of London.
What did John Smith force the colonist to do? He forced them to farm and to trade with the Indians.
What is the difference between raw material and manufactured goods? A raw material is a resource used to make the manufactured good.
What chance of survival did the colonist have on the first winter? 50-50
What were the first settlers looking for in the New World? Precious metals
Who had introduced tobacco to the colonists? John Rolfe
What was tw problems with James Fort location? The mosquitoes and they were to far upstream.
