Jamestown

QuestionAnswer
Why did the British want to move to the New World? Abundant natural resources, manufactured goods, and a place to send their poor.
What happened to the poor people? The poor people had land restrictions, and were given to the aristocrats.
What were the two attempts for the English to colonize in the New World? Newfoundland and Roanoke.
What was the first successful colonization by the British and how likely were you to survive? Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 where you had a fifty fifty chance about surviving.
Who financed Jamestown? Why? The Virginia Company of London for precious metals.
Who else lived in the region and who was the leader? Algonquian Indians, and ruled by Powhatan.
Who lived in Jamestown? Why? Aristocrats and their servants for precious metals such as gold.
Who came in to Jamestown and helped them get food? John Smith
Why did John Smith return to England? Gun shot wound.
What happened to Pocahontas? Some people say that she saved John Smith's life from execution. She then was kidnapped and married to John Rolfe.
Where was James Fort? Why was this bad? By the Jamesriver, which was too close to the ocean and not far enough up stream, so they didn't have enough fresh water. They also were near a marsh, which had disease carrying misquitoes.
When was the Starving Times? 1609-1610
What happened during the Starving Times? Bad relationship with Algonquians, low food supply (ship never came), cold winter, cannibalism, disease, conflict with Native Americans in the area.
Why did John Rolfe marry Pocahontas? To make friends with the Native Americans in the area.
