Civics Quarter 4 Vocabulary

| Canvass | Going to different houses and talking about your party/to go through a district or go to in order to solicit political support/ to seek orders or votes |
| Precincts | A subdivision of a country, town, city or ward for election purposes |
| Patronage | The power to make appointments to government jobs, especially for political advantage |
| Straight Ticket | When someone votes for all the candidates or issues supported by a particular political party |
| Split Ticket | When someone votes for people or issues supported by multiple political parties |
| Independent Voters | Voters who do not belong in a specific party, but still vote, or voters who are uncommitted to a political party |
| Two Party System | A political system where 2 parties dominant a government/ all political decisions |
| Self-Nomination | Someone declaring that they are running for office |
| Write In Candidate | Someone who asks voters to write in his or her name on the ballot |
| Caucus | A meeting of party leaders to discuss or choose candidates |
| Direct Primary | An election where members of a political party choose candidates to run for office in the name of the party |
| Open Primary | A primary in which voters do not need to declare a party before voting, but may only vote in one party's primary |
| Closed Primary | A primary in which a voter must be registered as a party member and may only vote for candidates of that party |
| General Election | An election in which voters make final decisions about candidates and issues |
| Voter Registration | The process of signing up to vote |
| Political Action Committee | A group formed to raise and contribute money to the campaigns of candidates |
| Opinion Polls | A way to show which candidates people favor at a certain time, why and what issues they think are most important |
| Incumbent | Someone who already holds the office for which he or she is already running |
| Electoral College | A process established by the founding fathers as a compromise between election of the president by Congress and election by popular vote/ voters vote for the electors who then vote for the President/ there are currently 538 electoral votes and a president |
