| absolute location | a point on the earth's surface expressed by a coordinate system such as latitude and longitude |
| basin | a natural depression on the earth's surface |
| bay | a broad inlet of the sea where the land that curves inward |
| canyon | a deep gorge |
| cape | a headland or promontory of large size extending into a body of water |
| channel | a length of water wider than a strait, joining two larger areas of water, especially two seas |
| cliff | a steep rock face |
| continent | any world's main continuous expanses of land |
| delta | a triangular tract of sediment deposited at the mouth of a river |
| divide | a ridge or line of high ground forming the division between two valleys or river systems |
| downstream | situated or moving in the direction in which a stream or river flows |
| elevation | height above sea level |
| equator | an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0 |
| glacier | a slow moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles |
| golf | a deep inlet of the sea almost surrounded by land, with a narrow mouth |
| harbor | a place on the coast where vessels may find shelter |
| highland | an area of high or mountainous land |
| hill | a naturally raised area of land, not as high or as craggy as a mountain |
| island | a piece of land surrounded by water |
| isthmus | a narrow strip of land with sea on either side, forming a link between two larger areas of land |
| lake | a large body of water surrounded by land |
| latitude | the angular distance of a place north or south of the equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes |
| longitude | the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian, usually expressed in degrees and minutes |
| lowland | low-lying country |
| map | a diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc. |
| meridian | a circle of constant longitude passing through a given place on the earth's surface and the terrestrial poles |
| mesa | an isolated flat-topped hill with steep sides |
| mountain | a large natural elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level |
| mountain peak | the summit of a mountain |
| mountain range | a line of mountains connected by high ground |
| mouth | an opening or entrance to a structure that is hollow, concave, or almost completely enclosed |
| ocean | a very large expansion, in particular, each of the main areas into which the sea is divided geographically |
| ocean current | a continuous, directed movement of seawater generated by the forces acting upon this mean flow |
| parallel | side by side and having the same distance continuously between them |
| peninsula | a piece of land almost surrounded by water or projected out into a body of water (a piece of land surrounded by water on 3 sides) |
| physical features | things such as landforms, bodies of water, climate, natural vegetation, and soil |
| plain | a large area of flat land with few trees |
| plateau | an area of relatively level high ground |
| prime meridian | the earth's zero of longitude |
| relief | difference in height from the surrounding terrain; the amount of variation in elevation and slope in a particular area |
| river | a large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the seas, a lake, or another such stream |
| sea | the expanse of salt water that covers most of the earth's surface and it surrounds its landmasses |
| sea coast | the part of the land adjoining or near the sea |
| sound | large sea or ocean inlet larger than a bay, deeper than a bight, and wider than a fjord; or it may be defined as a narrow sea or ocean channel between two bodies of land |
| source | headwaters of a river or stream is the furthest place in that river or stream its estuary or confluence with another river |
| strait | a narrow passage of water connecting two seas or larger areas of water |
| tributary | a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake |
| upstream | along a river, in the opposite direction from the way the water is flowing |
| valley | a low area of land between hills or mountains |
| volcano | a mountain or hill having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas are being or have been erupted from the earth's crust |
