Abraham Lincoln Assassinated 5 days after end of Civil War. For a lenient policy of reconstruction.
Andrew Johnson Impeached by Radical Republicans for being too lenient on policy of reconstruction.
Rutherford B. Hayes Pulled troops out of the South ending reconstruction and progress for freed African Americans.
Ulysses S. Grant Reconstruction policy weakened by scandals lead to loss of republican unity.
Ku Klux Klan A secret organization that use terrorist tactics in an attempt to restore white supremacy in Southern states after the Civil War.
scalawags A white southerner who joined the Republican Party after the Civil War.
carpetbaggers A Northerner who moved to the South after the Civil War.
Republican Party United the anti-slavery debate into a political platform and party.
Democratic Party United white Southerners who opposed reconstruction and African American political gains.
Dixiecrats Name applied to Southern Democrats who opposed federal interference in Southern policy.
