| aquifers | underground formation made of rock, silt, or clay where water has collected over centuries |
| bituminous coal | soft grade of coal, a natural substance used as fuel to generate electric power |
| bryozoans | seaweed like creature found in the inland seas. |
| derrick | part of the equipment used for drilling oil |
| dolomite | rock that is rich in calcium and was formed from deposits of billions of skeletons and shells. |
| fossils | preserved remains of plants or animals. |
| groundwater | water found beneath the earth's surface |
| limestone | rock that is rich in magnesium, formed from the deposits of billions of skeletons and shells |
| petroleum | dark, unrefined oil |
| quarries | places where stone or slate is dug out |
| supercontinent | the great land mass known as Pangea that geologists hypothesize, broke apart 200-300 million years ago, the pieces eventually forming the continents that we know today. |
| trilobite | most common form of early marine life when the sea covered most of the earth. |
