| plate tectonics | theory that explains how process with earth form continents and cause movements |
| earthquakes | sudden, violent movement of Earth crust, shakes the land |
| fault | crack in Earth's crust when plates collide |
| weathering | rock is broken down into smaller pieces, by ice, chemicals or even plants |
| erosion | rocks are moved by water, wind and/or ice |
| continental shelf | plateau off a continent that lies under the ocean |
| trench | cut in ocean floor |
| groundwater | water filters through soil into ground |
| aquifer | underground layer of rock through water |
| water cycle | water moves from the earth to air, back to earth |
| evaporation | water changes from liquid to gas |
| condensation | water changes from gas to liquid |
| precipitation | water falls to earth as snow or rain |
| collection | rivers & streams carry water that fall from the air |
| weather | change temperature, wind speed and moisture |
| climate | pattern of weather that takes place over many years |
| prevailing wind | wind patterns over time |
| El Nino | weather marked by heavy rains |
| La Nina | weather marked by cool waters |

| rain shadow | mountains that block rain from reaching regions |
| climate zone | similar patterns of temperature and rainfall |
| steppe | partly dry grassland found of edges of a desert |
| biome | area that includes particular kinds of plants |
| urban climate | weather patterns in cities, higher temps, wind patterns, rural areas |
| smog | thick of smoke or chemicals |
| acid rain | chemicals from air pop. combined with rain |
| greenhouse effect | certain gases built up Earths atmosphere |
| crop rotation | changing crops from year to year |
| deforestation | cutting forest without planting new ones |
| conservation | resources with care, so don't waste them |
| irrigation | collecting water and distributing crops |
| pesticide | powerful chemicals that kill crop destroying insects |
| ecosystem | shared by plants & animals depend on food for survival |
| biodiversity | variety of plants and animals on the planet |
