Conquistadors Soldier- adventurers.
Moctezuma The Aztec leader.
Plantations Large farms worked by laborers who live on the property.
Encomiendas Land grants that included the right to demand labor or taxes from Native Americans.
Missions Religious settlements.
Peninsulares Spanish colonists who had been born in Spain.
Christopher Columbus This person discovered America in 1492.
Vasco Núñez de Balboa A Spanish colonist who explored the Caribbean coast of what is now Panama.
Ferdinand Magellan A Portuguese explorer who set off to find the Atlantic Pacific passage.
Strait A narrow passage that connects two large bodies of water.
Circumnavigate To travel around the entire earth.
Hernando Cortés A conquistador who sailed from Cuba to Mexico with more than 500 soldiers.
Francisco Pizarro A conquistador who conquered the Incas.
Bartolome de Las Casas A priest who traveled through New Spain working for reform.
Merchantilism Held that colonies existed to make the home country wealthy and powerful.
John Cabot An Italian explorer who decided that a more northern route to Asia would be shorter and easier.
Northwest Passage A sea route from the Atlantic to the Pacific that passed through or around North America.
Henry Hudson An English Explorer who made four voyages looking for the Northwest Passage.
Samuel de Champlain A French Explorer who made the first 11 voyages to explore and map the lands along the St. Lawrence River.
Coureus de bois The French term for "runners of the woods," were independent traders who lived among the Indians.
Jacques Marquette A French Missionary who founded two missions among the Great Lakes.
Alliance An agreement between parties that benefits them both.
