6th Grade Social Studies - Chapter 3 Section 1: Culture

TermDefinition
Culture The way of life of people who share similar beliefs and customs. This includes many aspects of everyday life and it defines the 'differences' between one community and another.
History The past. Past events help shape how we view the world today.
Arts Pictures, Dance, music...An expression of what the people of a culture think is beautiful and important. Includes painting, sculpture, architecture, dance, music, theatre, and literature.
Religion A culture with different beliefs...This helps people answer basic questions about life's meaning.
Daily Life What you do and what you eat... What people do on a daily basis that reflects their culture.
Language How each culture speaks...This is the strongest unifying force within a culture. Allows people to communicate with each other.
Economy Money...How people in a society earn a living and affect the world around them. Examples include: agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries.
Government Creates rules and laws to help the people live together without conflict. Some governments had limited powers and others have unlimited powers.
Social Groups Groups of people with similar beliefs...The types of groups that exist within a culture are called this. Examining these groups of people is another way to study a particular culture.
- Monumental events are remembered, honored and/or celebrated - Holidays are celebrated each year - Stories of heroes and heroines help shape are values. - Past Disasters or defeats are not forgotten Examples of how history shapes a cultural
Painting, sculpture, architecture, dance, music theatre, and literature Examples of arts that may be expressed by a people of a particular culture
Some things that different religions may have in common Beliefs, ideas and practices
Five examples of major religions around the world Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism.
What we eat, how we eat, what we wear, the type of houses we build and how we spend leisure time. Daily life
Dialect A local form of language that differs from the same language in another area. For example: an accent or different pronunciation of the same word in different regions or use a different meaning for the word.
7 types of Government Limited Government, Democracy, Representative Democracy,Unlimited Government Dictatorship,Monarchy, Constitutional Monarchy
A type of Government where all people including the leaders obey the laws written in a constitution or statement of rights Limited Government
A type of Government where the power rest with the people of the nation Democracy
A type of government where citizens vote to elect representatives to make and enforce laws Representative Democracy
A type of Government that has rulers with powers that are not limited and they themselves do not need to follow the same rules governing the people Unlimited Government
This type of Government takes and maintains power using military or police force. Freedom of speech, the right of assembly, and freedom of press is often limited or forbidden. Dictatorship
A type of government where a king or queen is born into a ruling family. Until the 1600s this type of government had unlimited powers. Monarchy
In this type of government a king or queen is the symbolic head of the government but elected leaders hold the power to rule. Constitutional Monarchy
Five examples of social groups Economic Groups, Role Related Groups, Ethnic Groups, Majority Ethnic Groups, Minority Ethnic Groups
Rich, Poor, and Middle class people are examples of what kind of social group Economic Social Group
Parents and children, employer and employees, teacher and students are part of this social group Role Related social group
People who share a common history, language, religion, and some physical characteristics Ethnic Social Group
This ethnic group controls most of the wealth and power in a society Majority Ethnic Group
This ethnic group is smaller in number and different from the majority ethnic group. Minority Ethnic Group. (Minority Ethnic Groups can vary from region to region.)
The two largest minority ethnic groups in America African Americans and Hispanic groups.

Democracy A limited form of government where power rest with the people
Different countries that have traits in common and may share similar economic systems, government types, and social groups Cultural region
The process of spreading new knowledge and skills to other cultures cultural diffusion
An easy way to remember all eight traits of a culture is by using the acronym HARD LEGS. HARD LEGS represents... H - History A - Art R - Religion D - Daily Life L - Language E - Economy G - Government S - Social Levls
