Ch.18 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Reservation An area of public lands set aside for Native Americans.
lode A vein of ore metal in the earth.
transcontinental Extending across or relating two or more continents.
vigilante A member of a self-appointed group of citizens who undertake law enforcement in there community without legal authority, typically because the legal agencies are thought to be inadequate.
brand A type of product manufactured by a particular company under a particular name.
ghost town A deserted town with a few or no remaining inhabitants.
subsidy A parliamentary grant to sovereign for state needs.
ore A naturally occurring solid material from which a metal or valuable mineral can be profitably extracted.
Open range A large area of grazing without fences or other barriers.
nomadic A member of a people having no permanent abode, and who travel from place to place to find fresh pasture for their livestock.
Homestead Act An area of public land in the West (usually 160 acres) granted to any US citizen willing to settle on and farm the land for at least five years.
