| transcontinental | (especially of a railroad line) crossing a continent |
| vigilante | a member of a self-appointed group of citizens who undertake law enforcement in their community without legal authority, typically because the legal agencies are thought to be inadequate. |
| brand | an identifying mark burned on livestock or (especially formerly) criminals or slaves with a branding iron |
| ghost town | a deserted town with few or no remaining inhabitants. |
| subsidy | a grant of money from the government to a person or company for a action intended to benefit the public |
| ore | a mineral mined for the valuable substances it contains |
| open range | land not fenced or divided into lots |
| nomadic | moving from place to place with no permeant home or shelter |
