TermDefinition
Reservation The act of reserving something
Lode A vein of metal or ore in the Earth
Transcontinental crossing a continent
Vigilante a member of a self appointed group of citizens who undertake law enforcement in their community without legal authority, typically because the legal agencies are thought to be in adequate
Brand A marking by a hot iron
Ghost Town A deserted town with few or no remaining inhabitants
Subsidy A sum of money granted by the government (a business loan
Ore A natural occuring solid material from which a valuable mineral can be extracted
Open Range A large grazing area without fences or other barriers
Nomadic A person or animal that does not stay in the same place very long
Homestead Act a special act of Congress (1862) that made public lands in the West available to settlers without payment, usually in lots of 160 acres, to be used as farms.
