Chapter 18 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Reservation An area of public lands set aside for Native Americans
Lode An amount of a mineral (such as gold or silver)
Transcontinental Going across a continent
Vigilante A person who is not a police officer but who tries to catch and punish criminals
Brand A mark that is burned into the skin of an animal (such as a cow) to show who owns the animal
Ghost Town A town that no longer has any people living in it : an abandoned town
Subsidy Money that is paid usually by a government to keep the price of a product or service low or to help a business or organization to continue to function
Ore a naturally occurring mineral containing a valuable constituent (as metal) for which it is mined and worked
Open Range
Nomadic Oaming about from place to place aimlessly, frequently, or without a fixed pattern of movement
