| reservation | a tract of public land set apart for a special purpose, as for the use of an Indian tribe. |
| lode | a rich supply or source. |
| transcontinental | passing or extending across a continent |
| vigilante | done violently and summarily, without recourse to lawful procedures |
| brand | a mark made by burning or otherwise, to indicate kind, grade, make, ownership, etc. |
| ghost town | a town permanently abandoned by its inhabitants, as because of a business decline or because a nearby mine has been worked out. |
| subsidy | a sum paid, often in accordance with a treaty, by one government to another to secure some service in return. |
| ore | a naturally occurring solid material from which a metal or valuable mineral can be profitably extracted. |
| Open Range | a large area of grazing land without fences or other barriers. |
| nomadic | thus means anything that involves moving around a lot |
| Homestead Act | a house, especially a farmhouse, and outbuildings |
