Life in Colonial America

| House of Burgesses | First representative assembly of Jamestown Virginia. |
| Mayflower Compact | Pilgrims agreed to this self government before they got off the boat. |
| Fundamental Orders of Connecticut | Document written by Thomas Hooker and established self government. |
| John Peter Zenger | Published a newspaper accusing the Governor of New York of corruption. This man was put on trial and established the right of the press to criticize those in power, as long as it was the truth. |

| Puritans | Landed in Massachusetts Bay in 1630 and wanted to purify the church. |
| Great Awakening | Emphasized the power of religion in people's lives. |
| Mercantilism | Trade of the colonies in order to benefit the "Mother Country". |
| Atlantic Slave Trade | Trade that helped disperse African slaves throughout the Western Hemisphere. |
| Cotton Mather | A second generation New England theologian who was left in charge of the largest congregation in New England. He became one of the most influential men in the colonies. |
| Phillis Wheatley | Was an African who was kidnapped and brought to the colonies as a slave at the age of seven. She wrote poems about Christian salvation. |
