| Jamestown | first permanent colony in the new world located in Virginia in 1607 |
| Williamsburg | former capital of Jamestown Virginia colony |
| Pilgrims | Separatists who were unhappy with the policies of the Church of England. |
| Puritans | wanted to purify the church. |
| Mayflower Compact | document signed by Pilgrims at Plymouth Mass. before they got off the boat. |
| Roger Williams | started the colony of Rhode Island based on religious toleration. |
| Anne Hutchinson | forced to leave the church in Mass. because she disagreed with the New England Way and went to Rhode Island. |
| William Penn | founder of Pennsylvania for the Quakers |
| Quakers | group of protestants who opposed war. |
| Lord Baltimore | started the colony of Maryland as a safe place for Catholics. |
| James Ogelthorpe | formed the colony of Georgia as a place for imprisoned debtors and convicts sent from England. |
| Indentured Servant | a colonial landowner paid for their passage across the Atlantic and now they promise to work on the landowners plantation or farm, usually for 7 years. |
