Thomas Hobbes He believed that in the state of nature life was "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short"
John Locke He believed the purpose of government is to "protect life, health, liberty, and property"
Representative Democracy Form of government where people elect officials to carry out the day-to-day responsibilities of government
Social Contract When people agree to create a government to protect their individual rights
Judicial Review Courts have the power to review government acts and nullify them if they are unconstitutional
Checks and Balances System where each branch of government exercises some control over the others
Federalism Power is divided between a central government and smaller local governments
Popular Sovereignty People are the ultimate source of power
Separation of Powers Division of power among Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches
Limited Government No government official or agency is above the law and they cannot overstep the bounds of the Constitution
Bill of Rights Added to the US Constitution to protect people's individual rights from the government
Agents of Socialization Factors that influce peoples' beliefs such as family, gender, race, media, geography, and religion
Political Socialization A lifelong process by which people form their ideas about politics and acquire political values.
Executive power Authority to execute, enforce, and administer law
Legislative power Authority to make law and frame public policy
Judicial power Authority to interpret laws, to determine their meaning, and to settle disputes that arise within the society
Constutution The body of fundamental laws setting out the principles, structures, and processes of a government
Natural Rights the idea that all humans are born with rights, which include the right to life, liberty, and property
Conservatism Ideology that favors less government intervention, more individual responsibility and traditional family values
Liberalism Ideology that favors more government action to promote social programs and equality but opposes regulation of social behavior
Moderate A person that politically does not go to the extremes
Federalists Americans that favored the ratification of the US Constitution
Anti-Federalist Americans that did not support the ratification of the US Constitution
