6. Graft Illegally getting money/power
7. Individualism To believe that someone is able to be successful despite their background, if they try
8. Social Darwinism Philosophy based on Charles Darwin's theories of evolution and natural selection, supports the idea of individualism
9. Philantrophy Rich people give away big amounts of money to help others
10. Settlement House Institution in a poor neighborhood to provide medical care, child care, libraries, and classes in English
11. Americanization Process of gaining American traits and characteristics
12. Populism A movement founded in 1890s to help farmers increase their political power and to work for regulations in their interest
13. Greenbacks A paper currency that was first issued by the federal government during the Civil War, could not be exchanged with gold or silver coins
14. Inflation Prices increase, value of money decreases
15. Graduated income tax Taxes based on net income of individuals or businesses, taxes different income levels at different rates
16. Deflation Prices decrease, value of money increases
17. Cooperatives Stores where farmers buy each others products, operated by users of the service, work together to increase prices and lower costs
18. Poll tax Tax of a certain amount that had to be paid before a person was able to vote
19. Segregation Separating people by what their races, classes or groups
20. Jim Crow laws Discriminating laws
21. Lynch Execution, hanging, without a necessary legal trial
