Basic Maps and Geography Skills
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Scale | Used to determine distances in either customary or metric units between places on maps |
Key | The part of a map that displays the symbols used within the map |
Equator | 0 degree line of latitude |
Prime Meridian | The 0 degree line of longitude |
Cardinal Directions | North, South, East, West |
Intermediate Directions | northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest |
Absolute Location | The exact location of a place on earth based upoon latitude and longitude |
Latitude | Imaginary lines that run east and west but measure in degrees north and south (parallels) |
Longitude | Imaginary lines that run north and south meeting at a pole but measure in degrees east and west (also called meridian) |
Culture Geography | Human based aspects of geography including languages, religion, clothing, technology, government |
Physical Geography | Natural aspects of geography including landforms, waterways, natural resources and climate |
Political Maps | The aspects of geography created by governments and countries |
Resource Maps | Maps that show natural resources |
Historical Maps | Maps that show how places have changed over time |
Economic Maps | Maps that show where various goods are produced |
Chart | A data set that includes list of facts organized into catagories, also called a table |
Graphs | A data set in which the data collected is represented using a pie, line or bar |
Diagrams | A picture with descriptions |
Timeline | A way to organize events in history where the events are placed in choronological order between sets of time intervals |
