Basic Map skills

TermDefinition
Absolute location The exact location of a place on earth based upon a latitude and longitude
Cardinal directions North south east west
Intermediate directions Northeast Southeast Northwest and Southwest
Latitude Imaginary lines that run east and west but measured in degrees north and south also called parallels
Longitude Imaginary lines that run north and south meeting at the pool but also measured in degrees east and west also call Meridians
Equator The 0° line of latitude
Prime Meridian The 0° Line of longitude
Cultural geography Human based aspects of the geography including language religion clothing technology and government
Physical features Natural aspects of geography including landforms water with natural resources and climate
Political The aspects of geography created by government and country
Legend The part of the map that displays the symbols used within the map
Political maps Maps that show boundaries such as country or state boundaries
Physical maps Maps that show natural features and elevation of land
Natural resource maps Maps that show natural resources
Economic Maps Maps that show where various goods are produced
Scale Used to determine distances in either customary or metric units between places
historical maps maps that show how places have changed over time
