Geography Vocabulary

Geography Vocabulary Terms

TermDefinition
Equator The imaginary line that divides the earth halfway between the north and south poles.
Latitude Lines Lines that run east and west and measure north and south of the equator.
Prime Meridian The starting line for measuring longitude.
Geography The study of the earth and everything on it.
Region An area with at least one unifying physical or human feature, such as climate, landform, populatin or history.
Intermediate Directions The directions halfway through the cardinal directions: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest
Scale The measurement used to indicate the proportion that distances on a map have to the real distances they represent.
Hemisphere A half of the earth. This can be a division at the Equator or the Prime Meridian/ International Date Line).
Social Studies The study of people, their activities, their customs, and their institutions in relationship to other people. The five parts are government, economics, history, geography and culture.
Cardinal Directions North, South, East, West
International Date Line An imaginary line of longitude at 180 degrees that marks the beginning of the new day.
Absolute Location An exact position on Earth in terms of longitude and latitude.
Relative Location Location of a place relative to another place.
Longitude Imaginary lines that run north and south of the globe and meet at the poles. These lines are also known as meridians.
