Unit 1 vocabulary list

TermDefinition
continents the world's main continuous expanses of land (Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, South America)
ocean the whole body of salt water that covers nearly three fourths of the surface of the earth, which is divided into the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans
latitude the angular distance of a place north or south of the Earth's equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes
longitude the angular distance of a place east or west of the Prime meridian at Greenwich, England.
hemisphere a half of the earth, usually as divided into northern and southern halves by the equator, or into western and eastern halves by an imaginary line passing through the poles
poles a geographical pole is either of the two points-the north pole and the south pole-on the surface of a rotating planet
irrigation system of ditches and canals that transports water from a source into an agricultural field
Map Key A table of symbols used to explain a map or a chart
Map Legend A table on a map or chart explaining the symbols used. (also known as a map key)
BC / AD Before Christ, Anno Domini (in the year of our Lord)
CE / BCE Abbreviations for Common Era and Before Common Era (non-Christian alternatives)
Degrees A unit used to measure and determine locations on the globe
Equator Imaginary line that divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. It represents 0 Degrees latitude.
Prime meridian Located at Greenwich, England. It represents 0 Degrees Longitude on the globe.
Compass Rose Located on a map, it shows the 4 cardinal points of direction (North, South, East, West)
Natural resources Arable land, water, Minerals
Monotheism The belief in one (1) god.
Polytheism The belief in many gods.
Calendar Instrument used to organize time (months, days, years) used to recall holidays, season, religious dates
Written Language The passing down of knowledge through written word (instead of oral tradition) - ex. laws, traditions, knowledge, contracts, history
Autocracy Government with a single ruler (ex. Dictatorship, Monarchy - king or queen rule)
Oligarchy The rule of a select few over the masses of people.
Democracy Rule by the people. People participate through voting and elections.
Politics The structure, organization, and administration of a nation / country
Money A medium of exchange and store of value (ex. gold, silver, dollars, coins)
trade the process of buying, selling, or exchanging goods between people / nations
division of labor when a worker or group is assigned a specific task in order to increase efficiency
specialization the act of focusing on a single line of work
natural resources the natural wealth of a country consisting of water, land, forest, and minerals
taxes the sum of money demanded by a government for its support
social class a broad group in society having common economic, cultural or political status
social mobility the movement of people in a population from one social class to another
wealth a great quantity of money (valuable possessions, money, property)
slaves a person entirely under the domination of another person or group
family a social unit consisting of one or more adults and together with the children they care for
