| Border states | slave states that did not leave (secede) the Union |
| Free states | states that did NOT allow slavery |
| Confederacy | the government of the Southern states that left the Union |
| Union | another word for the United States of America commonly used before the beginning of the Civil War |
| secession | the act of leaving a nation by breaking away and creating a new government |
| slavery | the holding people against their will; treating these people and property to be bought and sold |
| abolitionist | those people who believed that slavery should ne abolished |
| arsenal | a building that stores military weapons |
| blockade | an act or means of sealing off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving. |
| states' rights | believing in the rights of states to make their own decisions regardless of what the federal government wants. |
| Fugitive Slave Law 1850 | Required citizens to catch runaway slaves |
| Fugitive Slave Law 1850 | If a person did not comply, they could be fined up to $1000 or put in jailed. |
| Fugitive Slave Law 1850 | Many slaves were captured and sent back to slavery. |

| Yankee | a slang term from the North |
| popular sovereignty | Political belief that allowed the settlers of U.S. federal territories to decide whether to enter the Union as free or slave states |
| Republican Party | formed in 1854 as a new political party- Abe Lincoln ran as Presidential candidate for this party. |
| compromise | an agreement or a settlement of an argument that is reached by each side giving up something. |
| fugitive | a person who has escaped or is in hiding. |
| sectionalism | the belief that one section of the country is better that another section |
| tariff | a tax on imported goods (goods purchased from another country) |
