Border states slave states that did not leave (secede) the Union

arsenal a building that stores military weapons
blockade an act or means of sealing off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving.
states' rights believing in the rights of states to make their own decisions regardless of what the federal government wants.

Fugitive Slave Law 1850 If a person did not comply, they could be fined up to $1000 or put in jailed.

popular sovereignty Political belief that allowed the settlers of U.S. federal territories to decide whether to enter the Union as free or slave states
Republican Party formed in 1854 as a new political party- Abe Lincoln ran as Presidential candidate for this party.
compromise an agreement or a settlement of an argument that is reached by each side giving up something.
fugitive a person who has escaped or is in hiding.
sectionalism the belief that one section of the country is better that another section
tariff a tax on imported goods (goods purchased from another country)
