| Alliance System | groups of countries formed in Europe to support each other in the war |
| Nationalism | a feeling of deep loyalty to one's own land |
| Imperialism | industrialized countries building oversea empires; desire to have bigger empires |
| Catalyst | an event that sets off a chain reaction of other events; the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand |
| Ultimatum | demand by one government that the other government accept its terms or face the threat of war |
