Vocabulary including sovereignty, states, territories, forms of government

government | the organization inside a state that controls the actions and policies of the state |
population | the group of people who are the members or citizens of a state |
state | a body of people, living in a defined space, with the power to make and enforce laws |
territory | the area in which a state's rule applies |
sovereignty | the ability to rule absolutely within a territory |
monarchy | type of government where a king or queen rules the country |
dictatorship | type of government where one leader has absolute control over citizen's lives |
oligarchy | type of government where a small group of people has all the power |
theocracy | type of government that recognizes God or a divine being as the ultimate authority |
anarchy | nobody is in control - or everyone is, depending on how you look at it |
autocracy | type of government where there is rule by one person includes monarch and dictatorship |
democracy | type of government where there is rule by many people |
representative democracy | citizens elect leaders to represent their rights and interests in government |
direct democracy | there are no representatives; citizens are directly involved in the day-to-day work of governing the country |
Junta | a small group of people - usually military officers - who rule a country after taking over by force |
oligarchy | means "rule by a few" |
Myanmar | has a Junta type government |

republic | also known as representative democracy or indirect democracy; government type of the U.S. |
Athens | city in Greece where direct democracy began |
democracy | derived from the Greek words demos and kratos which means people and power |
