Who were the two major British generals in the Revolutionary war? John Burgoyne and Lord Cornwallis
Why was the battle of Saratoga important to the American Revolution? It was the turning point that put the Americans ahead
Why were the Articles of confederation so weak? They were so weak because they gave too much state power such as able to print coin money, congress can't collect taxes, and too short governmental terms
In what year was the Constitutional Convention? 1787
What was the Virginia Plan? Who proposed it? The Virginia Plan consisted of a 3 house Legislature, a strong federal government, and population representation; Proposed by Edmond Randolph
What was the New Jersey Plan? The New Jersey Plan consisted of a 1 house Legislature, and equal state representation
What was the Great Compromise? The Great Compromise consisted of a 2 house Legislature, where the House of Reps is determined by population and the Senate is 2 senators per state
What was the Three-Fifths Compromise? Three fifths of all slaves follow taxed, but are represented
What social groups were the people at the Constitutional Convention? They were Rich, educated, land owning lawyers
What was the purpose of the Constitution? The Source of political power are the people
What social group wanted the Bill of Rights? The Anti federalists
What are the Three Branches of Government: What does each do? Executive: Enforce laws; Legislative: Make laws; Judicial: Interpret the laws
What is separation of powers? To divide the power exactly equal for each branch
What are checks and Balances? Each branch can check another and balance out another for law disagreements
What majority do you need to pass and amendment? A 3/4 or 75% majority
How do you cancel an amendment? By making a new amendment that says you cancelled the last one
Who were the five Revolutionary presidents in order from 1st to 5th? 1. George Washington 2. John Adams 3. Thomas Jefferson 4. James Madison 5. James Monroe
What were the first two main political parties? Federalists and Democratic Republicans
What did each believe? The federalists believed in a small federal government while the DR's believed in a strong one
Who were each parties leaders? Federalists: Alexander Hamilton Democratic Republicans: Thomas Jefferson
What were the 3 things in Hamilton's Financial Plan? 1. Pay off all war debts 2. Raise government revenue with a Tariff 3. Create the 1st national bank
What was the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794? A tax on whiskey made people rebel; Washington shut it down with troops
What were the two things George Washington said in his farewell address? To get rid of Political Parties and to stay neutral with European issues
What were the Aileen and Sedition acts? How did this make America feel about John Adams? The Aileen acts were against immigrants and the sedition acts said you can't criticize the government; People unhappy with John Adams
