| longitude | an imaginary line on Earth that goes from north to south and shows a location's distance from the Prime Meridian |
| prime meridian | runs north to south |
| equator | runs east to west |
| absolute location | the exact location of a place |
| relative location | the location of a place in RELATION to other landmarks |
| contigous | means to be touching or connected in an unbroken series |
| noncontigous | NOT touching or connected un an unbroken series |
| territory | an area of land controlled by a nation |
| canyon | a deep valley with steep sides. |
| climate | the weather in an area over a long period of time |
| intersecting | to meet and CROSS at one or more points |
| Geographic Information System GIS | uses DATA to manage, analyze, and share geographic information |
| Global Positioning System GPS | uses RADIO SIGNALS from satellites to find the ABSOLUTE LOCATIONS of places on Earth |
| population | the number of people who live in a place |
| influence | to change or affect someone or something |
| navigable | deep and wide enough for ships to travel on or through |
| tributary | a river or stream that flows into a larger river or lake |
