What was the name of the United States first form of Government? The Articles of Confederation
Why was America’s first form of government a failure? The States had to much power.
What was the goal of the Constitutional Convention? First it was to "revive" the A.o.C., but when James Madison suggested making a new form of Government with a form of checks and balances, it was agreed that the new goal was to do that.
What was the New Jersey Plan? The idea of the Senate today. The number of Representatives would be an equal number, leaning towards the small states, and making every state equal.
What was the Virginia Plan? The idea of the House of Representatives today. The number of Representatives would be based on the states population, giving the larger states an enormous advantage.
What was the Great Compromise? The decision to create Congress with two houses: The House of Representatives, and the Senate. The H.o.R.'s # of Representatives would be based on the population of the states, while the Senate's # of Representatives would be an equal number.
What was the 3/5th Compromise? The deal to make slaves 3/5 of a states population, even though "everyone is created equal" (it was the only way to keep the convention going)
Who was the main author of the Constitution? James Madison
What is the Preamble? An introduction sentence to the constitution, stating the intentions of the founding fathers.
What does the word “bicameral” mean? Two Houses or Groups (Comes from the Latin bi meaning two, and camera meaning room)
What is the primary role of the Legislative branch? To create bills to give to the President. A veto from the President can be overridden by a 2/3 vote from congress.
What is the primary role of the Executive branch? To sign bills into laws, or veto them.
What is the primary role of the Judicial branch? To interpret laws. There main job deciding what is constitutional.
What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives? Must be at least be 25, must have been a citizen of the state they represent for 7 years, and must be a resident of the state they represent.
What are the requirements to be a Senator? Must be a resident of the state they represent, must have been a citizen of the State you represent for at least 9 years, and must be at least 30 years old.
What are the requirements to be President? Must be a United States citizen, must be at least 35 years old, and must have been a permanent resident of the United States for at least
What are the powers of the President? Can sign or veto a bill, elect supreme court justices, is the commander in chief of the military, can make treaties with other countries (with Senate approval) nominating ambassadors (with Senate approval), can pardon someone of a crime, etc.
What are the powers of Congress? Declaring war, impeaching a president, etc.
How long is a House of Representative’s term? 2 years
How long is a Senator’s term? 6 years
How long is a President’s term? 4 years
