What was the name of the United States first form of government? Articles of Confederation
Why was Americas first form of government a failure? It gave more power to the states rather then the government
What was the goal of the Constitutional Convention? To revise the Articles of Confederation
What was the New Jersey Plan? Many delegates from small states feared that under a system of proportional representation, large states would become too powerful. The New Jersey Plan attempted to give small states powers in Congress equal to those of large states.
What was the Virginia Plan? It created a bicameral legislature with both houses based on proportionate representation. Much of the Virginia Plan was adopted by the Convention and written into the Constitution.
What was the Great Compromise? consisting of a Senate and a HOR. The Senate would have an equal number of reps. from each state. This would help the states with smaller pops.The HOR would include one rep. for each 30,000 people in a state. This helped states with larger pops.
What was the 3/5 Compromise? When a slave was counted as 3/5 of a person
Who was the main author of the Constitution? James Madison
What is the Preamble? The Preamble to the Constitution is an introductory, succinct statement of the principles at work in the full text
What does the word "bicameral" mean? being made of 2 houses
What is the primary role of the Legislative Branch? to make laws
What is the primary role of the Executive Branch? enforces the laws
What is the primary role of the Judicial Branch? to interpret the laws; check up on the other houses
What are the requirements to be part of the House of Representatives? must be at least 25 years old; must be a resident of the state they represent; and be a U.S. citizen for at least 7 years.
What are the requirements to be a Senator? must be at least 30 years old; U.S. citizen for 9 years; and must be a resident of the state they represent
What are the requirements to be President? must be at least 35 years old; born in the U.S.; and live in the U.S. for 14 years
What are the powers of the President? Leader of Executive Branch; Appointment and removal power; Budgeting; Law Enforcement; Veto; Emergency Powers; Foreign Affairs; Treaty Agreements
What are the powers of Congress? Impeachment powers; Treaties; Investigation; House leadership; Senate Leadership
How long is a House of Representative's term? 2 years
How long is a Senator's term? 2 years
