What is the name of the United States first form of Government? Articles of Confederation
Why was the first form of government a failure? Because it gave too much power to the states, and less to the national government.
What was the goal of the Constitutional Convention? To revise the Articles of Confederation.
What was the New Jersey Plan? A suggestion to the government to create a smaller state favoring government.
What was the Virginia Plan? A suggestion for the government to create a government favor larger states.
What was the Great Compromise? A proposed bicameral legislative that has the Senate with two representatives from each state, and a number of representatives for the House of Representatives by population. It compromised both of the plans.
What was the 3/5 compromise? A compromise that said that 3/5 of the slave population will have votes.
Who was the main author of the Constitution? James Madison
What is the Preamble? The summary at the beginning of the Constitution about the Constitution.
What does the word bicameral mean? Having two houses. Ex: Congress: Senate and the House of Representatives
What is the primary role of the Executive Branch? To carry out the laws.
What is the primary role of the Legislative Branch? To make the laws.
What is the primary role of the Judicial Branch? To interpret the laws.
What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives? They must be at least 25, a U.S. citizen for at least 7 years, and live in the state you represent.
What are the requirements to be a member of the Senate? You must be at least 30 years old, a U.S. citizen for 9 years, and they must live in the state they represent.
What are the requirements to be a President? Must be at least 35, be a native born citizen, and have lived in this country for at least 14 years.
What are the powers of Congress? They can approve presidential appointments, create bills that are with lawmaking, and nominate Executives.
What are the powers of the President? They approve bills and make them into laws, command the military, act as the chief diplomat.
How long is the House of Representative's term? 2 years
How long a Senator's term? 6 years
How long is the President's term? 4 years
How many Supreme Court Justices are there? 8 and a chief.
How long is a Supreme Court Justice''s term? Life
Who is the Chief Supreme Court Justice? John G. Roberts Jr.
Why are the Supreme Court Justice's terms so long? So they don't worry about making unpopular decisions.
What are the the three levels of the Federal court system? District, Appeal, Supreme.
What does "appeal" mean? Ask to apply to a higher court for a reversal of the decision of a lower court.
What branch approves all Supreme Court Justices nominations? The Senate.
What is Judicial Review? The power that the Supreme Court has to interpret the Constitution.
What does the 1st amendment protect? Freedom of religion, press, speech, petition, and assembly.
What does the 2nd amendment protect? Bear arms.
What does the 3rd amendment protect? No quartered soldiers.
What does the 4th amendment protect? Unnecessary searches and seizures.
What does the 5th, 6th, 7th amendments protect? Rights in a courtroom.
What does the 8th amendment protect? Cruel and unusual punishment.
What does the 9th amendment protect? All rights that weren't listed that are protected/implied rights.
What type of government does the 10th amendment list out? State government.
What is the Bill of Rights? First ten amendments to the Constitution.
What is the main job of the Supreme Court Justices? To interpret if laws are constitutional.

Who is the Vice President of the United States of America? Joe Biden
Who represents Massachusetts in the United States Senate? Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey
Who represents Wellesley (4th Congressional District) in the House of Representatives? Joseph P. Kennedy III
Who is the Governor of Massachusetts? Deval Patrick
What are the two ways to amend the Constitution? An amendment is proposed by Congress and it gets a 2/3 vote, then amendments or it is sent to the states to be approved by three-fourths of the states
What does it mean to “amend” the Constitution? To add a right, or to change it so it is more modern.
What are the three levels of government in the United States? (hint: our President is the Chief Executive of one of the levels) Federal, State, Local.
The First Amendment protects the freedom of speech unless… It threatens with violence, or endangers the public.
What is another name for the Executive Departments? Cabinet.
What is the main job of the Executive Departments? To advise the president.
What does the Department of Defense oversee (in charge of)? The military.
What does the State Department oversee? Diplomatic relations with foreign countries.
What does the Treasury Department oversee? Money coining and management of taxing.
What does the Department of Interior oversee? Federal land.
What does the Department of Homeland Security oversee? Terrorist attacks and emergency services.
What does the Justice Department oversee? The legal system.
Explain Congress's commerce clause? It outlines how they should regulate businesses and limits when they cross state or country lines.
Explain Congress's elastic clause? It gives them the right to make laws necessary and proper for our general welfare.
What is federalism? A system in which power is divided between the states and national.
What is the president in charge of, as the commander in chief? Military.
What is the president in charge of, as chief diplomat? Making relations with foreign countries, and appointing diplomats.
What is the president in charge of as chief economic advisor? The employment rates and how money is flowing, the economy.
What is double jeopardy? When you get twice for the same crime, 5 Amendment.
What does it mean to plead the 5th? To not talk because it may get someone in trouble. Preventing yourself from self incriminating.
What is eminent domain? The right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation.
