What was the name of the United States first form of Government? Articles of Confederation
Why was America's first from of government a failure? States were given the laws that were made, but they were not reinforced, so most states didn't follow them. A need for a stronger federal government was necessary. States had too much power.
What was the goal of the Constitutional Convention? It was to come together with (then) all 13 states and revise the A.O.C. and make it into the Constitution (that is currently our government).
What was the New Jersey Plan? The New Jersey plan was that all states would have 1 representative. This favored smaller states.
What was the Virginia Plan? The Virginia plan was that bigger states would have more representatives than smaller states. This favored bigger states.
What was the Great Compromise? It was how each state in America would be represented in Congress. (How many representatives would be in each state). The situation was the combination of the NJ and VA plan. It separated Congress into two houses.
What was the 3/5th Compromise? It was how the slaves who where in America would be counted for the population. It explained how slaves would be counted as only 3/5 of a person.
Who was the main author of the Constitution? James Madison
What is the Preamble? It is the opening statement of the Constitution. It explains why the Framers created the Constitution and why they made their nation a republic.
What does the word "bicameral" mean? It means there are two houses/chambers.
What is the primary role of the Legislative Branch? To make laws for the nation.
What is the primary role of the Executive Branch? To enforce or carry out the laws that are made.
What is the primary role of the Judicial Branch? To see any cases that get to the Supreme Court if they are constitutional or not. This is called judicial review. (To interpret the laws).
What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives? You must be at lest 25 years old, you must be living in the state you are representing, and you must have been a U.S citizen for at least seven years.
What are the requirements to be a Senator? You must be at least 30 years old, you must be a resident of the state you're representing, and you must be a citizen of the U.S for at least nine years.
What are the requirements to be the President? You must be at least 35 years old, a naturally born citizen of the U.S, and a resident for at least 14 years.
What are the powers of the President? The President can sign or veto any bills passed to him/her. He/she can also nominate supreme court justices, is Commander in Chief in war, make treaties with other nations, Chief Diplomat, etc.
What are the powers of Congress? To make money, declare war, make laws, impeach a president, create a postal system, approve justices, override vetos, regulate trade, etc.
How long is a House of Representative's term? 2 years
How long is a Senator's term? 6 years
How long is a President's term? 4 years
How many Supreme Court Justices are there? 9 Supreme Court Justices.
How long is a Supreme Justice's term? For life
What is the main job of the Supreme Court? To see what cases that are passed to the Supreme Court and if they are constitutional or not.
Why are the Supreme Court Justice's terms so long? This is so if they do something the President doesn't like, they won't be taken off the jury.
Who is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? The President
What are the three levels of the federal court system? U.S District Courts, Court of Appeals, Supreme Court
What does the word appeal mean? Apply to a higher court to have a new trial, new jury, new witnesses, and new evidence.
What part of the government has to approve all Supreme Court Justices? Congress
What is Judicial Review? It is when the Supreme Court reviews any cases passed to them and sees if they are constitutional or not.
What does the First Amendment protect? It protects the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and the right to petition on the government.
What does the Second Amendment protect? It gives citizens the right to own necessary weapons, the right to bear arms.
What does the Third Amendment protect? It protects citizens from soldiers living in their house.
What does the Fourth Amendment protect? It protects people and their belongings from unreasonable searches and seizures.
What does the Fifth Amendment protect? Protects from double jeopardy, prohibits self-incrimination, the right to a grand jury, the right to a fair trial, and protection from the government taking their private property without just compensation.
What does the Sixth Amendment protect? Designed to give accused persons fair trials.
What does the Seventh Amendment protect? Protects cases labeled as civil cases.
What does the Eighth Amendment protect? Protects people before and after trial. It also protects people from cruel and unusual punishments.
What does the Ninth Amendment protect? This amendment says that even though certain right are not listed in the Constitution, it does not mean that you are not protected from them.
What type of government does the Tenth Amendment protect? State Government
What is the Bill of Rights? It is the first ten amendments in the Constitution.

Who is the Vice President of the United States? Joe Biden
Who represents Massachusetts in the United States Senate? Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren
Who represents Wellesley (4th Congressional District) in the House of Representatives. Joe P. Kennedy
Who is the Governor of Massachusetts? Deval Patrick
What are the two ways to amend the Constitution ? -A vote that has 2/3 majority of both houses in Congress - A vote that has 3/4 majority of states agree
What does it mean to "amend" the Constitution? To modify a legal document or bill.
What are the three levels of government in the United States? Federal, State, and Local
The First Amendment protects the freedom speech unless... It threatens the government or puts people in clear and present danger.
What is another name for the Executive Department? The Cabinet
What is the main job of the Executive Departments? It's to help advise the President and help him make decisions on their own personal departments.
What does the Department of Defense oversee (in charge of)? It manages the armed forces and wars overseas.
What does the State Department oversee? It manages relations with foreign countries.
What does the Treasury Department oversee? It collects taxes, prints money, and deals with the nation's finances.
What does the Department of Interior oversee? It manages and protects the nation's public lands.
What does the Department of Homeland Security oversee? It protects against terrorists and other threats.
What does the Justice Department oversee? It fights crime and runs the federal court system.
Explain Congress's commerce clause. It gave Congress the power to regulate trade with foreign nations, among several states, and with Indian tribes.
Explain Congress's elastic clause. A statement in the U.S. Constitution granting Congress the power to pass all laws necessary and proper for carrying out the list of powers it was granted.
What is federalism? A union of states in which sovereignty is divided between a central authority and the member state authorities.
What is the President in charge of as Commander in Chief? He/She runs the military forces and gives them orders on what to do. He is practically the boss of the military.
What is the President in charge of as Chief Diplomat? In charge of interactions with other countries (making treaties, appointing ambassadors, etc.)
What is the President in charge of as Chief Economic Adviser? Taking care of the nations economy (unemployment, interest rates, etc.)
What is double jeopardy and which amendment protects us from it? Double Jeopardy means you cannot be tried for the same case again. The Fifth Amendment protects us from it.
What does it mean to plead the 5th? It means that you don't answer the questions being asked because it might make you look guilty.
What is eminent domain? The right of the government to take private property and use it as a public display or use for reasonable compensation. They cannot take your private property without paying you.
