What was the Name of the United States first form of Government? The Articles of Confederation
Why was America's first form of government a failure? Because there was not a proper balance between Federal and State government
What was the goal of the Constitutional Convention? To create a new form of government that would work and be able to stay for a long time
What was the New Jersey Plan? A plan that favored small states which had each state have 2 delegates or representatives
What was the Virginia Plan? A plan that favored large states which had each state have a certain number of delegates or representatives based on population.
What was the Great Compromise? A compromise to have a bicameral congress. One house that used the Virginia Plan and one house that used the New Jersey Plan. Each chamber could check and balance each other
Who was the main author of the Constitution? James Madison
What is the Preamble? The Introduction to the Constitution that starts with "We the People"
What does the word bicameral mean? Having two branches, chambers, or houses, as a legislative body
What is the primary role of the Legislative Branch? To Make Laws
What is the primary role of the Executive Branch? To Enforce Laws
What is the primary role of the Judicial Branch? Interpret Laws
What are the requirements to be a member of the House of Representatives? You must be at least 25 years old, have been a U.S. citizen for at least 7 years and must live in the State and Region they are representing
What are the requirements to be a member of the Senate? You must be at least 30 years old, have been a U.S. citizen for at least 9 years and must live in the State they are representing
What are the requirements to be a President? He/She must be at least 35 years old, must be a U.S. born citizen and must have lived in the United States for at least 14 years
What are the powers of the President? He/She can Sign or Veto bills
What are the Powers of Congress? They make and vote on laws or bills and send them to the President to be signed. They can also vote to impeach a member of the Supreme Court or the President
How long is a Representative's term? 2 years
How long is a Senator's term? 6 years
How long is a President's term? 4 years
What was the 3/5th Compromise? The compromise between Northern and Southern states for the number of representatives in congress
How many Supreme Court Justices are there? 9 Justices
How long is a Supreme Court Justice's Term? They are a justice for life
Why are Justice's terms so long? So the Justices don't have to worry about the public opinion
Who is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court? John Roberts
What are the three levels of the Federal court system? District Courts, Court of Appeals and Supreme Court
What does the word "appeal" mean? To apply to a higher court for a reversal of the decision of a lower court
What part of the Government has to approve all Supreme Court Justices? Congress must appoint all Justices
What is Judicial Review? Review by the US Supreme Court of the constitutional validity of a legislative act
What does the 1st Amendment protect? Freedom of Religion, Speech, the Press, Petition and the right peaceably assemble
What does the 2nd Amendment protect? The right to bear arms
What does the 3rd Amendment protect? The right not to quarter soldiers in your home
What does the 4th Amendment protect? The protection against unreasonable searches and seizures

What does it mean to plead the 5th? Protecting from Self-incrimination
What is eminent domain? the right of a government or its agent to expropriate private property for public use, with payment of compensation.
