Counterpoints Chapter 14 Terms

TermDefinition
Infrastructure Transportation and communications links, power distribution networks, schools, hospitals…
Developed country Mostly wealthy countries with a variety of industries and a well developed infrastructure
Undeveloped country Those countries with a poorly developed infrastructure.
Newly industrializing country Countries that are building up their industries and a well developed infrastructure.
Highly indebted poor country Those countries at the bottom of the HDI and in debt to developed countries.
Developing country Those that do not have a modern infrastructure or many industries.
GDP The total value of all goods and services produced in a country.
World Bank's poverty Where people in developing countries are earning less than $1.00 per day.
Structural Adjustment Program Where debtor countries are required to restructure their economy to encourage investment and export and often includes privatization of government services, the debtor will get additional loans to pay off the debt.
Multinational company A privately owned company operating in many countries; often wealthier than many poor countries.
Pandemic An epidemic that occurs over a wide area.
Multilateral aid Foreign aid provided by a number of donor nations.
Tied aid Foreign aid with conditions attached.
NGO Non-governmental non-profit organizations focused on a cause.
