Counterpoints Chapter 13 Terms

Demography The statistical study of human populations.
Crude birth rate # of births / population x 1000
Crude death rate # of deaths / population x 1000
Rate of natural increase (# of births - # of deaths) / population x 1000
Exponential rate of increase Where population doubles in size every generation.
Doubling rate Length of time it takes a population to double.
Immigration rate # of immigrants / population x 1000
Emigration rate # of people leaving a country / population x 1000
Net migration rate The difference between immigration rate and emigration rate.
Rule of 70 70 / rate of natural increase
Life expectancy The average number of years people are expected to live.
What is the WHO? World Health Organization.
Dependency ratio Ratio of people in the work force to children and adults over 65.
Population pyramid A bar graph showing population by age groups and gender.
Cohort An age group in the population (e.g. ages 20 – 24).
Population distribution The pattern of where people live.
Ecumene The populated area of the earth.
Population density Total population of a region / area of the region.
Crude density. Country’s population / country’s area
Nutritional density The measure of the nutrition produced from a unit of land.
